You don’t have to go to central London for shopping. You can buy everything in Muswell Hill and north London, from food to clothes and gifts.
Many of the interesting shops in Muswell Hill are independently owned, although there are some big names like Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s.
The most famous shop in Muswell Hill is Martyn’s. It is still owned and run by the same family which opened it at the beginning of the 20th century and is worth visiting for its specialist food and to see what shops in London used to look like 100 years ago.
We are also lucky in having two independent bookshops – one for adults and the other for children.
Wood Green, a short bus ride from Muswell Hill, has a small indoor shopping centre (“Shopping City”) and a high street with branches of Marks & Spencer, Primark and other well-known shops, as well as some bargain shops selling inexpensive but very fashionable clothes.
Brent Cross (a direct bus journey from Muswell Hill) is one of London’s largest indoor shopping centres, with two famous department stores, many fashion and shoe shops as well as bookshops, jewellers and sports shops. Here you can really shop until you drop (into one of the many cafes).
Camden Town with its famous shops and markets is also only a short bus ride from Muswell Hill. This is very much a student and young person’s part of London, with up-to-the-minute fashion, inexpensive jewellery, amazing shoes and leather wear, CDs, antiques, and much more. And when you are bored with shopping, you can relax with a walk along the Regent’s Canal which goes through the middle of London Zoo and past many beautiful houses.
